As I told you in my last post, my applications disappeared from the App Store because of a management bug on Apple side. Now they are back, you should be able to download them again.
And Rss Runner 0.7 has been accepted ! It provides the following features:
- Feed sort bar: allows to sort your feed by title, unread count or custom position. You can disable it or choose your preferred option in the Settings screen.
- Feed item search: now you can search feed items by keyword. You can choose the max results count in the Settings screen.
- Mark all items as read: now you can mark all items of all feeds as read using a button on the Feeds screen.
- Disable landscape: now you can disable landscape mode in the Settings screen.
- Disable badge icon: now you can disable badge icon in the Settings screen.
- Settings screen clearer: the Settings screen has been reorganized to be more clear.
I really thank you for having supported me with your e-mails. I hope Rss Runner will be back soon in the Top 50 of the Category “News”, in which he was since its first release in December 2008 until this issue 6 days ago.

Really love this app….. How do I use the custom sorting to sort the feeds as I want them ?
Thanks
Hi François, thanks for the update and I’m glad Apple is now hosting this application again. I’ve come back to RSS Runner after trying some other applications once I spotted your 0.7 was available.
It’s looking really good, thanks for all your efforts – the sorting by count means I can easily ‘hide’ the ones with no new items – a nice simple solution to this problem and one that works great.
My feedback for 0.7 is just on a few small issues. For example when viewing a feed item, the title of the story is in Times New Roman and pretty small, it just looks a bit strange as it’s different font to the text in the story. This was tested on a few different feeds.
I’ve marked some feeds as ‘read’ in Google Reader online but the RSS Runner is still downloading them and displaying them as ‘unread’ in the application, any idea what is causing that?
Also can we have an option to toggle the “Web Page” button to either display inside the application or to launch the page in Safari?
Is there a way to mark something as ‘unread’ – just because sometimes I open a feed item by mistake and don’t have time to read it, so I want to leave it as ‘unread’ for later?
Hope all of this is useful and thanks again for 0.7 as I’m going to use RSS Runner as my main app now
@Matt: The custom sort is based on their position in the list. Siwtch to Edit mode and reorder items using the iPhone standard way. Do you see what I mean ?
@Geoff: I will look at your font bug. Concerning your synchronization problem with Google Reader, please notice that Rss Runner does not synchronize with Google Reader, it just imports feeds from it. Marking feed items as unread should be implemented in a further version
Thank you both !
Thanks, is there any plan to synchronize it more fully with Google Reader? Otherwise, if I mark a feed as ‘read’ in your app and then visit the /reader page at Google I can’t tell what I’ve read on my phone or not – I kind of assumed this was a basic requirement of a portable reader?
Nice application! Is there an “All feeds” or “Unread” button that I am missing? (Rather than having to click on each feed.) Would love to see an option to auto-sync the feeds on start-up. That would be ideal. All the best!
@Geoff: at this time, Rss Runner should continue to only provide a way to import Google Reader feeds, and not perform a complete synchronization. Google does not provide any official API that could allow developers to do that.
@Kevin: You already have an “all feeds” button on the feed screen (see the checkmark) and the “unread” button should be provided in a further release
And the auto-refresh feed option is already available : see the application Settings (in the Settings application, in the home screen of your iPhone)
Hi Francois, You may have heard that NetNewsWire just updated and they built in advertising and made their app more web heavy. In effect, they ruined it. Bad for them, good for you. In searching for a replacement RSS reader, I found your tool. Very nice.
It was particularly talented at pulling in the list of all my RSS feeds from Newsgator via the OPML – add feeds.
If you don’t mind, here are two minor improvements
In the old NNW app, when you clicked on the “mark all as read” button, the app brought you back to the main list of all your RSS feeds.
Instead of showing the feed name truncated and the full date “Wednesday, September 22, 2009 11:06am”, shorten the date and word wrap the title of the article.
Thanks
Mark
PS where can I make a donation?
Great app François, I just migrated from another app which now requires (!) Google Reader – I just want a simple anonymous RSS reader that is self-contained on my phone so this is perfect. I only have one feature request – would it be possible to make it such so that you can skip “read” messages while navigating through a feed with the up/down arrows? Or perhaps have a “next unread” button that will jump to the next unread item regardless of which feed it’s in? That would make it a lot quicker to read all the new items in one go.
@François there are other applications that enable you to fully sync with Google’s Reader service, for example I’m just trying out one called Newstand which syncs with Google – so I guess they do have an API that handles that? Hope that helps
@Mark : Nice ideas, I could do that
Thank you for proposing donation, I will create a PayPal account. Stay tuned, it will be done as soon as I can
@Pom : I understand your need and your idea but I think it would be not very easy to understand for other users
@Geoff : Yeah, I know them. But I was talking about an OFFICIAL API, not just an API
this app is really awesome !
It would be perfect if it had some folders to group feeds… i follow 400+ blogs and that’s very hard to find one !
Thanks !
Hi Francois,
Thanks for you App.
But how to deny landscape mode, I can’t find setting page in your App.
@Liquid: Settings can be found in the iPhone Settings application, in the home screen of your iPhone.
Thanks for reply, it would be wonderful if you could sort out full support for Google Reader, so if I mark an article as ‘read’ on my iPhone then it’s marked as ‘read’ on account and other devices. There is also one called Byline and the new Netnewsstand that sync with Google so there must be a fairly official way? Your app is better than those, hence my continued request, I’m happy to help donate if that gets it on feature list?
@Geoff: I do not know such any “official way” but if it exists one, I would use it with a great pleasure !
I just downloaded RSS Runner from the App Store and I’m impressed. The interface is great although it took me a few minutes to learn how to set it up. Maybe you could provide a screen allowing people to import feeds on the first time opening the application?
Also, something minor, I like it to be names RSS Runner, not Rss Runner. It seems wierd because on my iPod its in lower but everywhere else, RSS is in caps…
Great app!
Hello from Russia!
Can I quote a post in your blog with the link to you?
I have a small problem. It found a feed for me but doesn’t show up.
@Mama2two: OK, please e-mail me your feed address at contact@golden-apps.com so that I can help you.
